Interview with Katarzyna Cecko, chief accountant at Aerosol Service

How did your adventure with accounting begin? Has it always been your passion?

My adventure with accounting began at a young age. I have always had a passion for numbers and data analysis, which made accounting a natural choice for me. I studied finance and accounting, and after graduation I started working in this field. Over time, I discovered that accounting is not only a job, but also my passion. I love the precision and responsibility that are inherent in this profession.

What were your first years at the company like? What was different then?

When I got to Aerosol Service 15 years ago, everything was different than today. It was a small, family-owned company, somewhere on the Slupsk-Ustka route. Today it is a thriving company, known in the industry worldwide, receiving awards for innovation, introducing a number of modern solutions. It is a company that sets directions in the industry, and with all its commitment does not forget the most important thing - the human factor. Throughout my time at Aerosol Service, I have witnessed many changes, in various areas, and I am proud to be a part of this company's history. 

How has the company changed over the years from an accounting perspective? What challenges have emerged as Aerosol Service has grown, and how has this affected financial management?

As the company grew, the scale of operations increased significantly. This meant more transactions to process, more complex accounting processes and the need to implement sophisticated software to meet the growing demands. As the company grew, it was necessary to comply with increasingly complex laws and regulations. Accounting had to stay abreast of all changes and ensure compliance with current regulations. Implementing new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and automation, can significantly impact accounting's efficiency, reducing processing time and minimizing the risk of errors.

What are the most important aspects of financial management in a manufacturing company such as Aerosol Service? Do industry specifics have a big impact on the day-to-day work of accounting?

Financial management in a manufacturing company is a complex process that requires consideration of many specific aspects. Monitoring and optimizing production costs are key to maintaining profitability. This includes managing the costs of raw materials, labor, energy and machinery maintenance. Effective inventory management of materials and finished goods is essential to avoid excessive storage costs and capital freezes. Regular creation of financial budgets and forecasts helps plan for future expenditures and investments, which is key to long-term financial stability.

Accounting is not just about numbers, but also about strategy. What business decisions at Aerosol Service had the most support from your department?

You're absolutely right - accounting is not just about numbers, but also about strategic support for the business decisions of those in charge of management. Accounting support was essential in planning the expansion of the plant. Financial analysis and return-on-investment projections allowed us to make informed decisions that will have a long-term impact on the company's growth. In addition, our accounting department played a key role in the financial analysis and evaluation of the profitability of investments in new technology and machinery. With accurate financial forecasts, we helped identify the most profitable investments that will increase production efficiency and Aerosol Service's competitiveness.

Financial law is becoming increasingly complex - how do you deal with it? Does technology actually help, or on the contrary, does it introduce new challenges?

Dealing with increasingly complex financial laws is a challenge that requires constant adaptation and learning. We regularly participate in trainings and courses to stay abreast of the latest regulatory developments. We also work with legal experts to ensure that our operations comply with current regulations. We use advanced accounting software that automates many processes and helps monitor compliance. In summary, technology definitely helps in dealing with increasingly complex financial laws, although it also introduces new challenges. The key is to strike a balance between benefits and challenges, and to continuously improve our skills and processes.

What challenge in an accountant's job would surprise people outside the industry? What is quite different about the role than is commonly thought?

The work of an accountant is often seen as monotonous and focused solely on numbers, but the reality is much more complex. Accountants often work under time pressure, especially during accounting periods and month-end closings. They must manage their time effectively to meet deadlines and ensure the accuracy of data. Financial and tax laws are extremely complex and constantly changing. Accountants must stay abreast of the latest regulations and know how to interpret and apply them in practice. Accounting is not just data entry, but also financial analysis and strategic advice. Accountants must be able to communicate effectively with various company departments, management and external stakeholders. Explaining complex financial issues in a way that outsiders can understand is key. Modern accounting requires familiarity with advanced technological tools such as accounting software, data analytics and process automation. Accountants need to be adept at using these technologies to increase the efficiency of their work. Contrary to popular belief, accounting requires creativity. Accountants must find innovative solutions to financial problems and optimize company processes.

What gives you the most satisfaction in your work? Is there a moment in your daily duties that gives you special joy?

The greatest satisfaction in my work comes from being able to influence development. I love the moments when I can see the results of my work. When I encounter complicated financial issues and manage to find a solution, I feel great satisfaction. This feeling that my skills and knowledge really matter is extremely motivating. In addition, working in a team and achieving goals together is also a source of great satisfaction for me. Collaborating with other company departments, sharing knowledge and solving problems together makes me feel part of something bigger.

What would you tell a young person who wants to start a career in accounting? What one piece of advice would you give yourself at the beginning of this journey if you could turn back time?

The work of an accountant requires great precision and accuracy. Always try to be meticulous and pay attention to details. This will help you avoid mistakes and build trust among colleagues. And a tip for me over 20 years ago... Don't be afraid to ask and seek support. At the beginning of your career, there may be many things that seem complicated and difficult to understand. Don't hesitate to ask for help from more experienced colleagues and take advantage of available resources. Cooperation and support from others can significantly accelerate your professional development.
